Most coloring books aimed at little children are drawn for older ones. Thin lines, fiddly detail, six small animals crowded onto a page. A three-year-old takes one look, colors straight over everything, and loses interest.
My First Animal Adventure is drawn the other way round. One animal per page, as large as the paper allows, in thick clear outlines with plenty of open space inside them. A child who can stay inside the line is a child who asks to do another page.
In the corner of each coloring page there's a small full-color version of that same animal.
It isn't there to say what the page should look like — purple lions are very much allowed. It's there because a child who can see where they're going starts with more confidence, and a parent who gets asked "what color is a hedgehog?" has an answer on the page.

17 animals across 27 pages, plus a "this book belongs to" page to fill in, a contents page, a note for grown-ups, and a certificate to sign and stick on the fridge when the last animal is done.
Every animal comes with a single real fact, written in one short sentence a young child can hold on to.
A fox can hear a mouse moving under the snow.
No two zebras have the same stripes — every one is different.
A koala sleeps for 18 to 22 hours every single day.
Read it out before they start. It gives the page something to be about, and it's the bit they repeat at dinner.
A confident two-year-old will happily scribble the panda with help. An older child will want to color the peacock's feathers properly and will take their time over it. The sweet spot is 3 to 5.
